On May 29, 2008, Ambassador Foley met with Dr. Lee Edwards from the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation during his recent visit to Budapest. Among the visit's key goals, Dr. Edwards is collecting oral histories from the survivors of Communism for inclusion in a virtual museum of the History of Communism. The virtual museum's web site is targeted to launch in January 2009, and will include history from the appearance of the Communist Manifesto to modern day Tibet, as well as virtual exhibits on various countries, including Hungary. During their meeting, Ambassador Foley and Dr. Edwards also discussed the importance of teaching about Communism and tolerance, especially to the next generation.
President Bush is the Honorary Chair of the Foundation and was at the inauguration of the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington, DC, last year. On June 12, 2008, the Foundation will commemorate the year anniversary of the memorial, and over 20 Ambassadors to the U.S. will be attending the ceremony.
