A technical team from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) visited Hungary May 5-9, 2008 in connection with ongoing efforts to bring Hungary on board as a new member country of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). The DHS team included members from the Office of Visa Waiver Policy, the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Transportation Security Administration. The team held meetings with Hungarian counterparts and visited Ferihegy Airport and a border crossing.
This visit is merely the latest in an ongoing series of visits and discussions with the Government of Hungary relating to the VWP. Hungary and the United States signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing on general provisions required for Hungary's eventual membership and we hope to conclude more specific arrangements on implementation over the next weeks and months. The Embassy is optimistic that it will be possible for Hungarian tourists and business visitors to begin traveling under the VWP before the end of this year.
